Stonecrop Apartments, completed in 2026, builds on a long tradition of providing high-quality, affordable housing in Middlebury, VT that started in the 1980s. The community is the cornerstone of the broader Stonecrop Meadows development, which, when it broke ground, represented the largest new neighborhood development plan in Vermont outside of Chittenden County in decades.
Stonecrop Apartments consists of 35 rental apartments, including 28 affordable units and 7 market-rate units. The community represents Summit’s first fully all-electric building and first geothermal heating and cooling system. The building is anticipated to be completed in June 2026.
The building consists of thoughtful and spacious studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and 3-bedroom apartments and offers available covered parking as well as shared exercise and other common spaces. As part of the broader Stonecrop Meadows HOA, it has access to community greens and extensive pedestrian connectivity throughout the community and to downtown Middlebury. The building is built to a high energy efficiency rating and with modern, high-quality finishes.
The project was funded with a combination of Low-Income Housing Tax Credits, ARPA funding, a Community Development Block Grant, energy efficiency incentives, and permanent debt. Summit Properties partnered with the Vermont Housing Finance Agency, the Vermont Housing & Conservation Board, the VT Agency of Commerce and Community Development, Green Mountain Power, construction partner Stewart Construction, and countless other partners. Stonecrop Apartments is operated by Summit Properties to maintain quality of appearance and experience for all those that call the community home.
